“I have found it easier to identify with the characters who verge upon hysteria, who were frightened of life, who were desperate to reach out to another person. But these seemingly fragile people are the strong people really.”
― Tennessee Williams

And although the images above could very easily work to convey a group of hysterics, they are, in fact, regular people competing in a “Stella” Screaming Contest. And though I’m not a suitable Stella-Screaming prospect, I’d show up to watch in a heartbeat.
To be honest, I’m not exactly sure why. Though I’ve seen much of his work, I’m not really a Tennessee Williams fan.
Is it the full-throaters? The constant comics? The attention grabbers? Not so much. I’m just ever and always an admirer of those who can jump in and give it all they’ve got.
Are you an avid Tennessee Williams lover? Mildly interested? Begrudgingly tolerant? Trying to find the up side? Or pretty put off?

I’ll just record one of my neighbours for you; I’m sure if shouty-screamers are your thing you could enjoy yourself. 🙂

Ha ha! Not so much.

What an interesting event. But I would never make it through all the screaming. Not a Tennessee Williams fan, either, although I tried hard a few times.

You tried — that’s better than I did! I can understand being bothered by screaming. Thankfully this was a bit lighter hearted, I think.

I actually happen to love Tennessee Williams…. maybe because the person who introduced me to his work was an ardent fan and it was contagious…. maybe because he shares the birth date of someone I loved dearly and see parallels to… maybe because I understand all too well how a tumultuous childhood can manifest in a million ways that make no sense to those outside of it.
He exposes those who bully others through their cruelty and thoughtless words without any self awareness (“All cruel people describe themselves as paragons of frankness.) and gives a bird’s eye view into their devasting effects on the softer hearted.
And then of course there is Marlon Brando who will forever be the best screamer of “STELLA!” Impossibly big shoes to fill there.

Not a Tennessee Williams fan at all, but I did go through a phase in my 20s where I screamed Stella quite a bit. I also screamed Adrian like Sylvester Stallone in Rocky. I have Tourette Syndrome. In general, I don’t blurt out words, but now I wonder if that’s what was going on. I wasn’t diagnosed yet. Just seemed weird.

That’s an interesting thought, Jeff. It could have been, though it could also have been youthful playfulness and release.
